Divorce for older couples can affect finances for retirement

Protecting assets for retirement and beyond is important to many in Tennessee when they file for divorce. This is particularly true of those who are over age 50, due to the potentially higher value of their assets and the closeness to retirement. For these individuals, the negotiation process over the division of assets in a divorce may be extremely important.

According to a recent study by a major university, the number of baby boomers filing for divorce is on the increase. In fact, the study showed that in 2009 Boomers accounted for 25 percent of the divorces filed across the nation. This is more than twice the rate of divorces for those over 50 than in 1990.

Divorce can lead to the temptation to spy, but should you?

When a couple files for divorce in Tennessee, it can be an emotional time. In cases where there are large assets to be divided, both spouses can be suspicious of the motives of the other. This suspicion can lead to a desire to spy on the other party to get an advantage in a divorce.

The desire to spy can easily be satisfied nowadays by using new technology. According to reports, miniature cameras, recording devices and software are readily available that can help spy on a person. These items can cost as little as $200 to $300 on the Internet. These devices can be a much less expensive alternative to the traditional method of hiring a private investigator.

No divorce is easy. As many in Tennessee know, there can be issues between a couple that can lead them to a long divorce proceeding. These issues can include asset division, spousal maintenance and child custody, among others.

Tennessee readers may be interested to learn about the recent finalization of the divorce between Cesar Millan, the famed "Dog Whisperer," and his wife. The couple had reportedly been married for 18 years prior to the filing. The divorce was filed in June 2010.

Is there a recipe for divorce? Study tracked couples to find out

As many in Tennessee know, the divorce rate in our country remains high. There are many reasons that marriages end, including job loss, other financial issues or infidelity. But sometimes a divorce occurs simply because a couple has grown apart.

Last week we discussed life expectancy and how it relates to divorce, and this week we found yet another study that sought to determine if there were predictors for divorce in marriages. Looking at 136 married couples who reported being very satisfied after four years of marriage, the researchers followed the couples to determine future happiness and eventual divorce for some. The study lasted for 10 years, and the couples were periodically interviewed over that time span.

Can life expectancy predict a Tennessee divorce?

There are many reasons that people get divorced in Tennessee. These typically include job loss, money problems, affairs or simply growing apart. Many factors go into the decision to divorce, but a recent study offers one surprising factor that some couples probably never considered.

A recent study found a correlation between a person's life expectancy and the likelihood that he or she will get a divorce. The researchers found that people with a lower life expectancy are less likely to decide to pursue a divorce. This may be due to the fact that they feel they don't have enough time left to make a change, according to the researchers.

Heidi Klum files for divorce from Seal after 2 months of separation

Tennessee residents may be interested to hear that supermodel Heidi Klum reportedly filed for divorce from her Grammy-winning husband Seal. The high-asset divorce was filed by Klum Friday, April 6, just two months after the couple separated.

The couple has four children together and has been married for about seven years. The couple renewed their wedding vows every year, and when they decided to separate, they agreed to keep their separation cordial and remain on good terms with one another.

CDC study reports divorce statistics in marriage survey

Tennessee readers of this blog may be interested in the results of a new study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study included a survey of about 22,000 men and women across the nation, and it was done in an attempt to find trends within first marriages. As part of that, it includes many findings with regards to divorce.

For example, it found that about half of all marriages end in divorce at some point in the first 20 years of the relationship. It also found that while women and men with a degree from college were more likely to put off marriage, they were also less likely to seek a divorce. However, perhaps the most fascinating statistic included in the survey is that moving in before the wedding is no longer a signal of poor chances for a marriage.

How Tennessee couples can take the sting out of dividing assets

Divorce can be a highly turbulent time in anyone's life. Often during this period, emotions are charged and couples face many hardships. However, for Tennessee couples who are filing for divorce, it may be helpful for the couple to calm down and deal with financial issues with a clear mind. That is easier said than done, of course, but it is an approach worth working toward.

One thing that may be necessary is to set up individual accounts instead of joint accounts and removing the the other spouse's privileges in all financial accounts. The individual will likely benefit from having his or her own credit card and bank account during divorce to ease the transition. Furthermore, divorcing couples may wish to look at critically at pension plans, 401k plans, IRA plans, retirement accounts, insurance plans and other investments. If the other spouse is a beneficiary on any of this accounts, the spouse might consider changing the beneficiary to someone else.

Parents with child custody may seek back-due support payments

Tennessee parents who have custody of children as a result of a divorce or separation often use child support payments as an important part of their monthly budget. Assistance from the noncustodial parent can be invaluable. When the child support payments are not made on time, it can present a hardship for the parent who has child custody.

It is important for parents who have primary custody of their children to know that it is illegal to stop paying child support. There are ways to collect support from noncustodial parents who have failed to meet their obligations, and one story from another state may offer some hope to custodial parents who are struggling without the child support they are owed.

Divorce filed against actor Dennis Quaid

Tennessee residents may be interested to learn that the third wife of actor Dennis Quaid filed for divorce recently. They have been married since 2004. Reports indicate the divorce action was filed on March 2.

The actor, who is famous for his many movies roles, confirmed that the divorce had been filed. The filing reportedly asserted that the marriage had become insupportable due to conflict of personalities, among other reasons, and that there was little chance of reconciliation. There may be additional documents being considered by the court including a petition for custody of the couple's young twins.
